3 min drive (1.3km)
Matsunoyama Ski Resort
Just 3 minutes (1.3km) from the house. Two lifts (Lift 1 + Long Lift 2), longest run about 1,500m, vertical drop about 180m — from beginner to advanced. A day pass is just ¥3,000 (half-day passes too). The real draw is how uncrowded it is: while famous resorts like Nozawa Onsen, Kagura, Naeba, Myoko and Hakuba fill up with overseas visitors, here there are few foreign tourists, so Japanese skiers can take their own pace in peace. And the snow is the light powder of Matsunoyama, one of the snowiest places on earth. Snow camping, air-board and snow-bike are on offer, and the on-mountain Yukitsubaki ramen is a local favourite. Best of all, after skiing you can warm up at Matsunoyama Onsen, one of Japan’s three great medicinal springs — having both the slopes and a therapeutic hot spring within a 3-minute drive is something no other ski area offers.
